A leptospirosis outbreak in the lower Northeast affected 184 people from
[1 Jan 2012] to [1 Jun 2012], 7 of whom died, Nakhon Ratchasima's
Disease Control Office 5 director Dr Somchai Tangsupachai reported
yesterday [2 Jun 2012].
Surin had seen the severest situation with 78 leptospirosis patients, 4
of whom died, followed by Nakhon Ratchasima's 39 patients (3
fatalities), Buri Ram's 57 patients, and Chaiyaphum's 10 patients, he added.

[The newswire above reports 184 cases of leptospirosis in the lower
northeast of Thailand between 1 Jan and 1 Jun 2012. According to the
Thai Ministry of Public Health, Bureau of Epidemiology (BOE) report on
leptospirosis, available in Thai at
http://www.boe.moph.go.th/boedb/surdata/506wk/y55/d43_2155.pdf,
between 1 Jan 2012 and 25 May 2012, a total of 827 cases and 18
fatalities were reported from 59 provinces. The attack rate was 1.30 per
100 000 population. The case fatality rate (CFR) was 0.03 percent. Of
these, 184 cases and 7 fatalities were reported from reporting area zone
14; 78 cases and 4 deaths were reported from Surin province, 57 cases
and no deaths were from Buriram, 39 cases and 3 deaths were from Nakhon
Ratchasima, and 10 cases and no deaths were from Chiyaphum.
The south region has the highest attack rate (per 100 000 population) of
leptospirosis (2.62), followed by the northeastern region (2.26), north
region (0.63) and central region (0.17). High attack rates (per 100 000
population) were reported in the provinces of Phatthalung (9.26), Surin
(5.66), Ranong (5.50), Si Sa Ket (4.91) and Loei (4.67).
In 2011, a total of 4261 cases and 70 fatalities attributed to
leptospirosis were reported in Thailand. The attack rate was 76.71 per
100 000 population, with a CFR of 0.11 percent. Of these, a total of
1062 cases and 30 deaths were reported from reporting area zone 14; 430
cases and no deaths were reported from Buriram province, 427 cases and
17 deaths were from Surin, 143 cases and 9 deaths were from Nakhon
Ratchasima, and 62 cases and 4 deaths were from Chaiyaphum.
